A number of people have wanted to know more about who “we” are and why we are posting such detailed footage. Ben and Carol Boles have owned the Crown King General Store in Crown King since 2004. Carol also sells a large amount of cabins and land around Crown King as Branch Manager and Co-owner Firebird Realty. Ben and Carol’s daughter Jackie Briggs, is the Designated Broker and Co-Owner of Firebird Realty and runs our office in Phoenix, Arizona. Jackie was just this week named one of the National Association of REALTORS® Top 30 agents under the age of 30 in the entire country. The person writing all these posts about the fire is Dane Briggs, Ben and Carol’s Son-In-Law (married to Jackie) and works in the Phoenix area as a real estate agent as well. Dane is an avid outdoorsman, and technology guru. Which is why he has spent hours updating this site throughout the Gladiator Fire incident. He has hiked and off-roaded in almost all of the areas being affected by the Gladiator Fire.

We haven’t yet posted a single plug for our companies, but with a slow news day, figured it wouldn’t hurt. If you are looking at buying or selling Real Estate in Crown King or Phoenix, give us a call and see if we can help you out. Also, every year we put on a charity event at the Mill Restaurant in Crown King benefiting the Child Crisis Center. This year’s Wine in The Pines was scheduled for June 9th, but will most likely be postponed to then of July or early August due to the fire. Make sure you check out www.WineInThePinesAZ.com for more info on the new date if you are interested in coming.

Today’s Fire Update:

View From Mayer High School Credit: photo by Michelle Fidler, SWIMT

If you live in Arizona you probably recognized how windy it was today. Wind gusts around Crown King and the Gladiator Fire were reported to be in excess of 50mph. These strong winds not only grounded Air Tankers for the majority of the day but also helped drive the fire further to the Northeast.

Today the communities of Pine Flats and Turkey Creek were evacuated as the Gladiator Fire moved closer and closer. Type 1 helicopters continued to attack the fire from the air as much as possible and continued to do so until 7:22pm. The only good news of the day is that winds are expected to lessen over the weekend and an increase in humidity is also expected. This will help fire crews gain control over the Gladiator Fire in the coming days. The size is currently estimated at 9,900 acres and is expected to continue to grow.

We will be posting another update this evening most likely with another Google Earth fly over tour explaining where the fire is burning as we did yesterday. To view that video visit our post Day 5 Update 3. The other good news while not official is that it appears more and more with each passing day that the town of Crown King will be saved from the fire. The fire is still the number one priority wildfire in the country.

An important thing to remember is that while the fire is still only 5% contained, this does not mean that the fire crews are not making progress. The containment lines are getting bigger ever single day, the problem is so is the fire. Which is what is causing the containment to remain at 5%. Think of it as a 100ft long line. 5% of that is 5 feet. Well when that line grows to 1000ft, 5% is 50ft. So the crews are continuing to increase the areas of the fire that are contained, but as the fire continues to grow, they are having more area to fight. Hope that explains the containment questions that have been raised.

Also, there have been some questions about the Summer homes at Horsethief Basin. While we are not an official source, based on what I saw last night on my trip up the mountain, I would say that the summer homes in horsethief have nothing to worry about at this time. It would take some severe wind changes and something drastic for them to affected.

Below is a couple of video clips from newscasts this evening on the Gladiator Fire.

Good afternoon everyone. Sorry for the delay in the update. There will be two parts of this update, the first being the official status of the fire as reported by incident command and the second being what I witnessed when driving up a replacement generator last night to town.

The Gladiator Fire is currently the number 1 priority fire in the nation and as many resources as possible are being directed towards saving Crown King. As of last night there were more than 700 firefighters battling the Gladiator Fire north of Crown King. 140 more fire fighters are expected to arrive today to assist in the efforts. As we stated yesterday, the crews are pulling off the immediate lines and are working on creating much larger fire breaks further out in front of the fire. The plan now is to stop the fire at the Goodwin Rd on the North Flank and Senator HWY to the West. Today is expected to be the windiest day yet so expect lots of smoke in the air when looking towards Crown King. Crews are still worried about it flanking around town on the West side and coming in town. Cleator may be asked to evacuate in the next day or so as the fire is getting closer to their town.

As I mentioned in the last post, the generator in town that had been supplying the Crown King General Store and the Crown King Fire Department started going out. We were able to track down a 60k generator from Empire Cat after hours and take it up to Crown King last night. A huge thank you to Empire Cat Rentals that returned to their shop even though they were closed and got us a rental generator we could take up. We arrived in Mayer around 10pm to get our pass to go up the hill and arrived in Crown King around 12:30am after being processed at all the different checkpoints.

I will record another video as I did yesterday describing what I saw with an overview of the fire map so you get a better idea of

Area Map.
the fire lines. The fire is definitely burning closer to Cleator than I expected. It is also burning very hot on the North side of the Desoto Mine. The area just before the first switchback has all burned as well as the canyon that is overlooked by the Peck and Swastika Mines. At midnight the fire was still burning extremely hot and tall flames were seen all over the canyons. It has crossed to the road to the East of the switchbacks and is burning there. While it was very dark out and we couldn’t see beyond 10ft off the side of the road we tried to get the best idea of where the fire had burned. There were a number of spots that had burned entirely going up but there were also plenty of spots that hadn’t. With it being dark, we could see the glowing embers in the night to get an idea of where the hot spots were. Once we went the the sharp curve known as “Grapevine” and “Peanut Butter Pass” we couldn’t see any active fire hot spots all the way in to town which is good news. There was one or two little flickers of light down in Hell’s Hole, but nothing like I was expecting. The majority of fire activity at least near the road was further from town than i was expecting. I believe hat the fire crews do have that Southeast flank contained as they are reporting.

Once in town, Crown King looked as great as ever, just much darker. There were two Yavapai County Sheriffs Officers at the General Store. The town was very quiet but then again it was also very late. The good news was that from the front porch of the

Carl Shaffer and Dane Briggs deliver 60kw Generator to town.

Crown King General Store you could not see and sign of fire last night. No glowing sky, no smell of smoke, nothing. We know the fire is still closer to town than we could tell, but it was refreshing to feel like the town was going to be safe. We were able to get the generator connected and left town around 3am and returned to Phoenix around 5am. It was a long night but the generator will be more than enough for what is needed. A big thank you to Carl Schaffer who helped find the generator and drive it up to town. Watch the first video on Day 2 Update 3 for info on Carl’s house and how it was protected from the fire by designing it to withstand forest fires. Also thank you to the Arizona Virtual Jeep Club that posted our request on their page and many members of their group were helping look for a generator. We are excited for their next run to Crown King.

As soon as it is deemed safe they are working on getting residents to return as soon as possible, but that is going to be a few days still. I imagine that as long as the fire is burning along the main road to town, it will be too dangerous for them to open the road. Also they are making sure that they don’t let us back, only to have the fire flank the West side and have to evacuate again.

The two maps being used show both the general area view of the fire as well as the fire progression chart so you can see where the fire has burned each day. I will be doing another Google Earth flyover video later today as well as providing updates about the fire and its activity today. Remember we love to read your comments below as well as appreciate you sharing our page on Facebook.

(Update 7:06pm: Below is now the official high-res map of the day)

We got a copy of the latest fire map. This is not the topo map, we are still trying to get that. This is a map that shows the roads. The fire is getting so large, that I don’t know if we will be able to get a good copy of it, but we will try. You can see clearly on this map how much growth has been attained by the Gladiator Fire as it is growing North away from the town of Crown King. Seven Air Tankers (Slurry Bombers) are currently making passes at the fire and are trying to accomplish as much as possible before high winds ground them early this afternoon. They are hoping to continue making passes until 2pm today.

Check back often for more updates on the Gladiator Fire and updates as to what is happening in Crown King.

The Gladiator Fire grew significantly over the last 24 hours and is now estimated between 5,500 and 6,000 acres. It is still only 5% contained. The majority of this growth is in the uninhabited areas of the Prescott National Forest North of town. As we mentioned in our update last night, fire crews have changed strategies and pulled off the immediate fire lines. They have pulled back to roads around the North side of town and are hoping to use them to create larger fire lines in hopes that when the fire reaches them they will be prepared to stop it from advancing and crossing the road.

The main focus of fighting today is still the area around Bear Creek Canyon and trying to keep the fire from racing up the canyon which would put the communications towers on the Wildfire and Towers Mountain at risk. Power is still out in town and propane trucks were heading up to Crown King to refill the generators at these communication sites to keep them operational.

Today is going to be the windiest day this week and crews will be fighting the fire hard. Wind gusts are expected to top 30mph, with an increase in wind speeds tomorrow. This has created another Red Flag Warning for the crews on the mountain.

Two Type 1 Helicopters have already been requested to fight the fire near the communication towers. Air Tankers (Slurry Bombers) have not yet started making passes this morning, but they are hoping to get them in the air soon. The focus of Incident Command is still to protect the towers and the town, which is why we are seeing the fire grow North unchecked. The Gladiator Fire is reported to be within 1/8th mile of some homes on the outskirts of town. This is most likely the cabins that are scattered along the road past the Gladiator Mine.

Another meeting is scheduled for tonight at 6pm for the community of Crown King. If you wish to attend it is being held at the same place, Mayer High School. If you are interested in watching it streamed live, the last few nights Channel 3 and Channel 15 have streamed it.

Check back often for updates.

There was another community meeting this evening at 6pm in Mayer at the High School regarding the Gladiator Fire in Crown King, AZ. Today was a big day for the fire and it gained significant acreage. The Gladiator Fire was measured last night at 1700 acres and grew quickly in the high winds and near record heat. The current estimates put it at 5400 acres. The fire gained the majority of it’s ground on the North side which currently is not being attacked from the air or ground as no structures are in it’s path. The plan is to let the North side burn to the point that it hits the lower elevations with more sporadic fuel sources and burns itself out. This is letting the fire crews focus on the more dangerous Western front of the fire. The western side of the Gladiator Fire is the side that is in danger of flanking around behind Crown King and getting pushed by the winds back into town. The Southeast side of the fire isn’t being attacked either, but is burning in the area that was burned in 2008 during the Lane 2 fire and doesn’t have much fuel so is not advancing quickly. The surprise last night was that while forest fires usually slow down as the night goes on and get less intense, last night was different. The fire burned very hot until the 4am hour due to the dense fuel sources around Towers Mountain. For those unfamiliar with this part of the mountain, the vegetation is full of Ponderosa Pine, Scrub Oak, Juniper, Manzanita, and Chapparal. This did not allow much down time before it picked up again in the morning.

The focus on the Western Flank is changing strategies also. Fire crews have been fighting the fire with a “one foot in the black” strategy. This means fighting right along side the fire lines trying to stop it, literally with one foot on burned ground and one foot on unburned ground. In the coming days the fire crews are will be pulling off the immediate fire lines and focusing more on creating wider fire lines along the road system. The thought on this is that when the fire gets to that line, it will run out of fuel and they will be able to keep it from jumping the wide lines with no vegetation.

As I stated earlier today, many air support resources are being used on the fire when weather allows. For a number of hours today in the early afternoon the Air Tankers (Slurry Bombers) were either grounded or diverted to the Fire near Payson. Around 5pm air tankers began focusing on the Gladiator Fire again and worked till the sun went down. All day Type 1 Helicopters (Chinooks with buckets and Sky Cranes with snorkels) attacked the fire. The helicopters are still pulling water out of Horsethief lake, but that source expected to run dry soon. The crews have permission to pull water from Lake Pleasant, but that additional flight time makes the helicopters less successful. Sources of water around Prescott are being sought out to use for water as well.

Power is still off on the mountain. Each morning the incident commanders are evaluating the risk level and have yet to determine it is safe for APS to begin reinstalling power lines. Once they are allowed to do so, it will take 24-48 hours for power to be restored. Due to the extended period of time power has been out, the county will be providing dumpsters in Crown King for residents to dump spoiled food.

Another structure was lost today in the fire as it moved North. On the Northeast side of the fire, it passed through a old patented mining claim and took one of the historic buildings that was used as a residence occasionally. On this side of the fire it is still burning hot and moving quickly. It is now a few miles outside of Cleator, but is expected to run out of fuel before it gets there.

With the main road still having fire activity, efforts are being made to work on repairing Senator Highway from Prescott to allow residents to return and also provide a secondary escape route that could be used by all vehicles from Crown King in the future. No time frames have been set for residents to return, but plans will be announced once it is safe to do so and there is no further threat of evacuation. At first full time residents will be allowed up, after a few days all property owners will be allowed up, then after a few more days the roads will be open to the general public. We are hoping this happens before Memorial Day Weekend.

Below is the best copy of the fire boundary map for the Gladiator fire. The clarity is not that good so for comparison click here to go to the post with yesterday’s map. It will open in a new window so you can compare the two maps and get your bearings. I hope to have a more detailed map from tomorrow morning’s briefing.

We will post another update tonight with this evening’s news coverage video links and any further info. Look for more updates throughout tomorrow. And remember we love reading your comments at the bottom of the page and appreciate you sharing the links on facebook for your friends to read. Thank you for your support and concern for Crown King.

We will have a more detailed update in a few hours, but we wanted to keep everyone up to speed on the Gladiator Fire in Crown King, AZ. Winds have been a big issue today with gusts between 30 and 40mph. The high winds again grounded the Slurry Bombers in the afternoon, but they are trying to get a few more runs in after 6pm until it gets dark. Type 1 Sky Crane Helicopters continued making water drops in the high winds to assist ground crews. The Gladiator Fire moved North and Northwest today. The first part of the day was spent trying to keep if from going down into Bear Creek on the North Side. Around noon it reached the bottom of Bear Creek and started climbing up the other side. The main focus on air operations today were on the west flank where the fire is most active.

It doesn’t appear that any structures burned today which goes to show how hard the fire crews are working. As an update on the three injured fire fighters, two suffered dehydration and one has suffered burns. All reports indicate that they are recovering.

There is another meeting for the community tonight at 6pm at the Mayer High School. All interested parties are invited to attend.

We will have another update for you in the coming hours and are working on the topo map with fire lines of the Gladiator Fire. Look for an update in the next few hours.

Remember, we welcome your comments, and feel free to like our posts on facebook. This included moving North a couple of miles. The North flank is now in lower elevations with more sporadic fuel sources. The main firefighting front today is the West side, which is flanking through Bear Creek as expected. This is also where the fire is most active. One more firefighter injury was reported in the last 24 hours, but no details are available on that injury. This brings the total number of injured firefighters to three.

Crews were battling the fire this morning with an impressive amount of resources. All 5 slurry bombers from Prescott were making staggered runs on the fire at regular intervals. Also, all tankers that were available from Gateway airport were requested. It is unclear at this time if any of those are available. Two Type 1 Helicopters are dropping water at regular intervals on the West side of the fire as well. Two more Type 1 helicopters were ordered in the 10:00am hour.

The meeting last night did not paint a pretty picture for Crown King. The fear is that the Gladiator Fire is going to run up Towers Mountain, and move downhill into town. Because of this the remaining residents that were staying back in town were urged to leave. Most have done so, and only a limited few remain. Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office has said that they are working on providing transportation to a few residents that do not have their own transportation. Any residents that are still in town are told that if they leave their property for any reason, they will not be allowed to return. Power is still out in town, and APS has not yet started repairing the lines. Once it is safe enough for them to do so, it will take another 24 hours for power to be restored.

There is another meeting tonight at 6pm at the Mayer High School for residents to talk with fire officials and receive an official update.

As soon as the map of the fire boundaries is available, we will post it on this site. Check back often, and remember we welcome comments at the bottom of the page. Also, feel free to like the page on facebook.

(Update: 11:49pm) Well I lied… one more update. First off there has been a new EIN Update on the fire. The full text of it is below but the summary of it is: The Gladiator Fire grew to approximately 2,000 acres today and we have 5% containment. There is also another community meeting tomorrow in Mayer at 6pm at Mayer High School.

For the second part of the update, as I said before the owners of the Crown King General Store, Ben and Carol Boles have been in town keeping the store open for the fire fighters to get supplies. Carol came down the mountain today. Ben is currently shutting down operations at the General Store, turning off generators and securing everything. He will be leaving shortly to come off the hill. Very few people remain in Crown King, and it looks like they are all being urged to leave tonight. For the Crown King residents, Ben is bringing all US Postal Service Mail that was left in people’s boxes down off the hill with him. He will deliver it to the Mayer Post Office sometime tomorrow. We will update the blog when that happens.

(Update : 11:04pm) We are done for the night. We will have topo maps with fire area overlays in the morning and will update all day tomorrow.

(Update: 10:33pm) We are not ones to speculate, so we will let you watch the videos below and decide for yourself on the situation in Crown King. We will continue to post updates tonight and we will be back in the morning with another full update.

No real update here, will have one soon on this page so check back. Just wanted to say I will be linking to newscasts coverage and trying to get copy of full community meeting from the news stations. There are lots of rumors going around about what was said at meeting. I don’t want to post anything that isn’t verified.

For those that are worried, Carol is off the hill, she drove down this afternoon on the main road.

Check back to this post in the next few hours for the update and we will lots of updates tomorrow.

Update (5:10pm) – Last update for a couple of hours, it is still windy for the Slurry Bombers to be working on the North Side of the fire. Helicopter crews are still making regular drops. Reports are that the crews will be flying until 7:00pm tonight and they may try to get a few more bomber runs in before dark. It sounds like the fire covered a lot of ground today with the wind and heat, but mostly was burning on the North and Northwest sides. As long as the winds don’t change to coming from the North and moving South, Crown King should do fine tonight. I will update the page later tonight with with videos from the news coverage. Check back often, and leave us a comment at the bottom if you like the info we are sharing, or better yet like the post in facebook and share with your friends.

Update (3:29pm) – It was determined that it is too windy for slurry bombers to continue efforts. Helicopters still being used. Fire is making a strong run on North side. Crews starting defensive work on structures on the North side of Gladiator Mine.

Update (2:49pm) - Slurry Bombers were requested to return to the Gladiator Fire to test the wind to see if they could resume attacking the fire from the air. It sounds like two of the tankers have been assigned to another fire, but two tankers are available and will be on route to Crown King to start dropping slurry on the lines again. Helicopters have been consistently making drops all afternoon.

(Updated at 12:30) Winds are picking up and creating problems for the fire fighting crews fighting the Gladiator Fire in Crown King. Some slurry bombers were reporting increasing levels of turbulence when making their passes. With the wind forecasted to continue increasing in the afternoon, this could cause problems. If the air crews are grounded due to high wind, the only defense is the crews on the ground. The fire is still being reported as 1700 acres.

It appears that crews have gained permission to dip water out of Lake Pleasant and are currently doing so. It seems that the helicopter crews are continuing their air attack, but the slurry bombers are making their final passes and will be waiting for better weather.

For the time being we will post updates on this page, check back and refresh the page for the most current info.

The most recent official update:

Source: Southwest Area Type-1 Incident Management Team; Prescott National Forest; Arizona State Forestry Division

Posted May 15, 2012, at 10:51 a.m.) Joe Reinarz’s Southwest Area Type 1 Incident Management Team assumed management of the Gladiator Fire yesterday evening.
Forecasted drier weather and associated strong erratic winds may complicate suppression efforts. Winds from the southeast and south are expected to push the fire north and northwest today. Gusts up to 35 mph are expected this afternoon. Fire behavior is expected to be active to very active.

Fire crews continue working to suppress the fire and provide structure protection to homes in the community. Firefighters will focus on perimeter control when they can do so safely and effectively. In areas where direct attack is not feasible, they will focus on protecting individual structures ahead of the fire.
